I am planning a vacation to the US this year - any recommendations/advise for following Route 66?

Wow, what a great trip! I have never followed 66, but know about northern Arizona's points of interest. Also check out the amazing web site: www.historic66.com which has turn by turn directions, side trips, etc.

One side trip it does not mention is the Grand Canyon... When you get to Flagstaff or Winslow, Arizona, you can drive 81 miles north of Flagstaff on State Route 180 or 59 miles north of Williams on State Route 64 to see it.

Another suggestions is to pick up a ';Traveler - Discount Guide/Hotel Coupons'; from a Denny's restaurant (they are often next to a La Quinta hotel) and use the coupons for inexpensive hotel stays. Only catch is you have to wait till after 6:00 p.m. to ask if the hotel has a room available for that coupon rate. There is a slim possibility you have to ask more than one hotel; I have used these coupons for years, and only once was told that the rooms at the coupon rate were sold out. You could also visit their website at www.roomsaver.com. This pamphlet also shows food/gas/hotel exit by exit... It covers a couple of states (i.e. Texas/Oklahoma/Arkansas), so as you travel along, you need to pick up new ones.

Finally, if you have heard of Sedona, its red rocks and ';magic'; you can get there from Flagstaff in an hour...I am planning a vacation to the US this year - any recommendations/advise for following Route 66?

you can only really enjoy route 66 in a old VW bus
Definitely stop in St. Louis at Ted Drewe's famous Frozen Custard. It's been around forever and they have the best frozen custard you have ever tasted.
Bon Voyage,
