Pls advise difference between cartoon and animation?

The word cartoon used to refer to comic strips but because of the stylistic similarities between comic strips and early animated movies, ';cartoon'; came to refer to animation, and this is the sense in which ';cartoon'; is most commonly used today. Nowadays, the word cartoon and animation refer to the same thing: an animated piece of film. However, the word cartoon is considered by many as a derogatory term that connotes the association of the medium with solely children's entertainment whereas animation is more precise as a term since it refers to the medium in general that can have many genres. If you want to find out more you could check Wikipedia with the key words ';cartoon';, ';animation'; and ';animation cartoon';. Hope this helps!Pls advise difference between cartoon and animation?
